What is Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT)?
CBT is a talking therapy which can help with a range of emotional and psychological difficulties. It can help to change the way you think (Cognitive) and then what you do (Behaviour). CBT focusses on the here and now rather than past issues. The basis of CBT focusses upon beliefs formed during adolescence and adulthood which affect the way we think, feel and behave. During stressful times people think differently about themselves, situations and others and what may happen to them. This results in people prolonging the distress they are experiencing. CBT helps to identify and then rectify a person’s negative views of themselves, situations and others in order to lead a happy and healthy life. The goal of CBT is to help a person become their own therapist with a toolkit that can be used in trigger situations.
What will happen in therapy?
Initially during an assessment session Caroline will gather information about your current difficulties, identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that may be maintaining your difficulties.
Caroline will then be able to provide information on your suitability for CBT and a potential treatment plan. During the first session we would work together to develop a formulation which explains the cause and maintenance of your current difficulties. Goals for treatment would also be established and how many sessions are likely to be needed based on evidence based guidelines recommendations and the extent of your difficulties. Sessions are normally 60 minutes and treatment ranges from 10 – 20 sessions in accordance with NICE Guidelines. However, some problems may take longer to treat and this would be discussed with you at your assessment session. Subsequent sessions work on two aspects of CBT 1. Cognitive Therapy, which is designed to change unhelpful thinking patterns 2. Behavioural Therapy, which is designed to change unhelpful and limiting behaviours.
Referrals are accepted from GP's, self funding individuals, Company Employment Assistance Programmes (EPA’s) and companies working on behalf of solicitors or insurance groups.
Health Insurance Packages - you may be able to use your health insurance package for your therapy.
